Separation Day Delaware - Since 1976, Delaware has had a tradition of celebrating its birthday on the second Saturday in June each year in New Castle.

Cindy Snyder, manager of the New Castle Courthouse Museum, said as far as she knows, this has only happened twice in the last 40-plus years. That was in 2020 and 2021, due to the pandemic.

"The purpose of Independence Day is really to celebrate Delaware's independence from Great Britain and Pennsylvania," said Julie Wegner, manager of Event Allies, which organizes the celebration for the city of New Castle. "It's one of the longest-running events in the state."

Friday's kickoff party (6 to 9:30 p.m.) for Farewell Day kicks off on Delaware Street, featuring food trucks and craft beer with bartender tips to benefit the Volunteer Fire Department, according to media materials.

On Saturday, the fun is amped up with a parade (noon) that travels down Delaware Street to Courthouse Square, featuring reenactors, bands and classic cars.

The parade is followed by Art Nouveau Day in Battery Park. The free event will feature a vintage market, live music, vendors, kiddie rides, food trucks and a beer garden. According to the materials, the children's travel will be paid for.

The main stage music lineup includes Blues Reincarnation Project (2 to 3:30 p.m.), Blue Cat Blues (4 to 5:30 p.m.), Jimmy Pritchard Band (6 to 7:15 p.m.) and Big Package (8 to 9 p.m.). at 30 hours).

June 15, 1776 - Delaware declares its independence at what is now known as the New Castle Courthouse Museum. That moment occurred just a few weeks before the Declaration of Independence was introduced.

At that time, all the states were in revolution against Great Britain and wanted to become their own free states. But that was not enough for a small miracle. If they were going to take a British subject, they figured they might as well secede from Pennsylvania.

Before that, Delaware was known as the "Three Lower Counties of Pennsylvania" from the time of William Penn, which was in 1682, Snyder said.

"It's really exciting because this event is part of New Castle, Delaware and our history. We're celebrating Delaware statehood right where it happened," he said. "It's a big birthday."

Breakout Day will be held around Battery Park (New Castle Battery Park, 1 Delaware St., New Castle) from 6 to 9:30 pm on Friday (kickoff party) and from noon to 9:30 pm on Saturday; Entrance is free. For more information, visit separationdayde.com.
